Established Trees (in the ground 3+ years): Water deeply once every 1–2 weeks. Apply water slowly at the drip line, the outer edge of the canopy, not at the trunk. Let it soak 12–18 inches into the soil. Aim for 5-10 gallons/week per inch of the tree’s diameter. Newly Planted Trees: (within the last 2 years): These need more attention. Water every 3–5 days, slowly, at the base. A 5-gallon bucket (filled multiple times) with a small hole in the bottom works as a low cost slow-drip tool. Driplines, tree watering bags, and other irrigation set ups also work. Best Time to Water: The best time to water trees is early in the morning. This timing allows water to soak deep into the soil while temperatures and winds are low, reducing evaporation. It also gives leaves time to dry, preventing fungal diseases. Mulch Now, Before It Gets Hot: If you haven't mulched yet, do so now. A 3–4 inch layer of wood chips in a wide ring around your tree (not touching the trunk) insulates roots, holds moisture, moderates soil temperature, and keeps weeds at bay. Aim for a ring at least as wide as the canopy. Hold Off on Heavy Pruning: Summer pruning stresses trees. Unless you're removing a hazard, save major pruning for late fall or early spring. Light deadwood removal is fine. Watch for Heat Scorch: Scorched, brown leaf margins can be a sign of heat and drought stress. This often looks alarming but is survivable if you respond with deep watering and mulch. However, repeated stress year after year weakens trees and makes them vulnerable to pests and disease. Prioritize Your Youngest Trees: Newly planted trees have the smallest root systems and the least resilience. A tree planted last fall or this spring that goes unwatered for two weeks in July may not recover. Bonus: Have a newly planted tree? Make sure to remove those nursery stakes and plastic ties!
